On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Navy’s advanced stealth frigate, INS Shivalik, arrived at the port of Yokosuka, Japan. The ship is set to participate in the eighth edition of the Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2024 (JIMEX 24). This annual exercise, first held in 2012, aims to strengthen cooperation and improve the interoperability between the navies of Bharat and Japan.
In a welcoming ceremony, Vice Admiral ITO Hiroshi, Commander of the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) Yokosuka District, greeted the INS Shivalik. Ambassador Sibi George, the Bharatiya Ambassador to Japan, was also present at the event, highlighting the importance of the exercise for both countries.
JIMEX 24 will feature two main phases: the harbour phase and the sea phase.

During the harbour phase, the crews from both navies will engage in professional exchanges, sports, and social activities, fostering camaraderie and understanding. Following this, the sea phase will involve joint exercises designed to enhance warfighting skills and operational coordination. These exercises will cover various disciplines, including surface, sub-surface, and air operations.
The INS Shivalik represents the Bharatiya Navy, while the JMSDF is represented by the Guided Missile Destroyer, JS Yugiri. Both ships will also deploy their integral helicopters to participate in the drills, adding another layer of complexity to the operations.
Over the years, JIMEX has grown in scope and sophistication. The 2024 edition provides a significant opportunity for both navies to learn from each other’s best practices. It also facilitates operational interactions, promoting mutual cooperation and reaffirming the shared commitment of Bharat and Japan to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.
