Bharat has announced its participation in the upcoming global Peace Summit in Switzerland, scheduled for June 15-16, with the aim of fostering peace in Ukraine. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, addressing a special briefing, stated that Bharat’s representative for the summit will be decided soon. The decision will be shared once finalized. Ukraine seeks to garner international support for its peace plan, with over 100 countries invited to the summit.

Switzerland, in April, announced its intention to host a high-level international conference in June to facilitate peace discussions for Ukraine. The conference aims to develop a common understanding among world leaders towards achieving lasting peace in the region. Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan, announced in 2022, forms the basis for discussions at the summit.
However, Russia has declined to participate in the ‘Ukraine Peace Summit,’ rejecting President Zelenskyy’s peace efforts. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia would not engage in events supporting Zelenskyy’s peace initiatives. Despite Russia’s absence, the summit remains a significant platform for global leaders to address the Ukrainian conflict.
Vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi Statue
In a separate development, Bharat has raised concerns with Italian authorities regarding the vandalization of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi by pro-Sikh separatist elements. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed that appropriate action has been taken by Italian authorities. This incident echoes previous instances of vandalism against Mahatma Gandhi statues in foreign countries, including Canada and the United States.
