Along with Doval, Dr. PK Mishra was also re-appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These two retired bureaucrats are now the longest-serving principal advisors to the Prime Minister.
Dr. PK Mishra will handle administrative matters and appointments within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). On the other hand, Ajit Doval will manage national security, military affairs, and intelligence. Doval is known for his expertise in counter-terrorism and nuclear issues. He brings a unique combination of strategic thinking and operational planning to the PMO.

Ajit Doval is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1968 batch. He has a strong reputation as a counter-terrorism expert and a strategic thinker. Doval has a wealth of experience in dealing with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. He has also been instrumental in handling India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RA&W).
Dr. PK Mishra is a retired officer from the 1972 batch. He has been closely associated with Prime Minister Modi for the past decade, even before Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014. Mishra previously served as the Agriculture Secretary to the Government of India, known for his low-profile approach, Mishra is deeply trusted by the Prime Minister.
Ajit Doval has played a crucial role in several important national security matters. He was the Prime Minister’s key advisor during the Doklam standoff with China in 2017 and the military tensions in East Ladakh in 2020. Doval also serves as Bharat’s special representative in negotiations to resolve the boundary dispute with China.
Doval has extensive experience in handling sensitive issues. He served as the Intelligence Bureau’s (IB) operational chief in Punjab and as an additional director in Kashmir. His firsthand knowledge of Pakistan’s activities in these regions has been invaluable. Doval also dealt with Khalistani extremism while stationed in London and Pakistani jihadist movements while serving in Islamabad.
