The India Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions is likely to prevail in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand while heatwave conditions may prevail in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar over the next dew days.
In a post on X, the IMD wrote, ‘Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions very likely in many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar & Jharkhand while heatwave conditions very likely in many parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Western Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh & Odisha and few parts of Jammu Divsiosn on 14th June, 2024’.
It further tweeted, ‘Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions likely in many parts of Uttar Pradesh & few parts of Jharkhand while heatwave conditions likely in isolated pockets of Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar on 15th June 2023’.
Earlier on Thursday, severe heat waves prevailed in parts of Delhi, UP and Bihar with mercury soaring past 46 degrees Celsius-mark at several places. No immediate respite in sight on account of slow progress of the southwest monsoon.
Bihar’s Buxar recorded 47.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country on Thursday, which was 8.9 degrees above the normal maximum temperature for the season.
The IMD in its extended range forecast for the next two weeks, said the cumulative monsoon rains logged across the country for the first 12 days of this season was 4% less than the normal, with northwest India remaining parched with 53% deficient rains.
