Severe landslides and flooding in the Mangan district of northern Sikkim swept away homes, leaving at least six people dead while five more are missing.
With over 1,500 tourists trapped and essential road connectivity destroyed, the disaster caused by relentless rain has cut off communities like Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung from the outside world.
The situation of the impacted population by the tragedy has worsened as a result of the failure of vital infrastructure, such as the recently built Bailey Bridge at Sangkalang, failing to withstand natural disasters.
The removal of electrical poles and the disruption of mobile network services have further added to the difficulties faced by rescue and relief efforts caused by the flooding or damage of houses.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri and other department heads have taken immediate action to address the situation while establishing relief camps and organizing rescue efforts.
The chief minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang has pledged his support and instructed officials to give relief efforts top priority. The state administration promised to support the victims and their families wholeheartedly, offering resources and help for their recuperation.
In view of the massive landslide, concerns for nearby towns like Singtam are heightened by the Teesta River’s startling surge, which poses a threat to low-elevation places. The Melli stadium in Namchi district is underwater, serving as a symbol of the natural disaster’s extensive effects.
Restoration of communication and provision of vital supplies are continuing while the region struggles with the repercussions. Though there are still many unknowns regarding the magnitude of the damage and the number of casualties, the road to recovery is still difficult.
In the days ahead, the ability of Sikkim’s communities to withstand the difficulties of harsh weather and natural disasters will be put to the test, highlighting the necessity of prompt, well-coordinated responses, unity, and unwavering support.
