On June 15, 1947, the Indian National Congress approved the partition of the country during its session in New Delhi. The plan approved for the partition of British India was known as the Mountbatten Plan. Although announced on June 3, 1947, Indian leaders formally approved it on June 15, 1947. This plan called for the division of India into two independent countries, India and Pakistan, based on religious grounds: Hindu-majority areas would become India, and Muslim-majority areas would become Pakistan. Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, announced the plan. Following this, India and Pakistan gained independence on August 15, 1947, and the formal partition took place. The partition led to a large-scale migration and significant violence, resulting in millions of deaths. It is considered the largest mass migration in history, with approximately 15 to 20 million people displaced between India and Pakistan.

At the time, the Pakistani army had captured the 17,000-feet-high Tololing peak and was continuously firing on the Indian army. Major Ajay, who was commanding a contingent of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, was tasked with recapturing Point 5140 on the Tololing Ridge. As his team advanced, they came under heavy Pakistani fire. Despite this, the Indian soldiers pressed forward. During the assault, a shell explosion injured six soldiers in Major Ajay Singh’s team. Ignoring the danger to his own life, Major Jasrotia began carrying the injured soldiers to safety. While he was in the process of rescuing his comrades, a shell exploded near him, causing severe injuries. Despite his injuries and excessive bleeding, he continued his efforts until he succumbed to his wounds, achieving martyrdom. For his indomitable courage, bravery, and exemplary leadership during the war, Major Ajay Singh Jasrotia was posthumously awarded the Army Medal.
