India Only South Asian Nation at Swiss-Hosted Ukraine Peace Summit | What’s on Agenda?

In a significant move towards global diplomacy, India confirmed its intention to participate in the next peace meeting over the Ukraine issue in Switzerland. The summit, which is slated to take place on June 15 and 16, is to mobilize support from around the world for the peace initiatives put up by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This would be a major step towards bringing about long-lasting peace in the region ravaged by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, however, Russia and China, both, have decided to skip the summit.

After having a “very productive” day at the G7 Summit in Italy’s Apulia where PM Narendra Modi interacted with various world leaders, the Prime Minister returned to New Delhi earlier today.

Addressing the Outreach Session of the Group of Seven Summit, PM Modi on Friday reiterated the concerns and priorities of the Global South, emphasizing that they “are bearing the brunt of global uncertainties and tensions” happening worldwide.

India also called for an end to the monopoly in technology to guarantee its access to everyone around the globe, creating an inclusive society and eliminating social disparities.

In a bid to ensure that Artificial Intelligence remains transparent, fair, secure, accessible, and responsible, PM Modi further pledged that India would collaborate with all nations highlighting that India is among the first few countries to formulate a national strategy on artificial intelligence with the mantra ‘AI for All’.

While highlighting India’s approach in the field of energy, PM Modi underscored that it is based on principles of availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability.

On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, PM Modi “interacted with world leaders and discussed various subjects”, with the discussions focusing on creating “impactful solutions that benefit the global community and create a better world for future generations”.

The leaders included Japan’s Fumio Kishida, Germany’s Olaf Scholz, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, and US President Joe Biden among others

Additionally, PM Modi held a separate bilateral meeting with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni to discuss ways to further cement the India-Italy relationship in various areas like commerce, energy, and defense. He expressed his gratefulness to PM Meloni for inviting India to be a part of the G7 Summit

In another interaction with Pope Francis with a warm embrace, PM Narendra Modi extended a personalized invite to the Vatican to visit India, stating that he greatly admires the pontiff’s commitment to serving the people

Pertinently, following the Outreach Session, all the G7 members and the special invitees gathered for a family photo where India took center stage as PM Modi stood in the center, flanked by Japan’s PM Fumio Kishida and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
