G7 leaders accused China of enabling Russia’s war in Ukraine. The leaders threatened sanctions on those who aid Russia’s military efforts.
This warning came from the G7 summit in Italy. It coincides with the pressure of United States on Europe to take a more powerful stance against China’s support for Russia’s military.
‘China’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base is allowing Russia to maintain its war in Ukraine and has significant and broad-based security implications’ said the G7 leaders in the statement.
G7 leaders added, ‘We call on China to stop the transfer of dual-use materials, such as weapons machinery and equipments that are useful for Russia’s defense sector’.
The G7 leaders also threatened actions, such as sanctions, to punish Chinese entities that they say are helping Russia evade Western restrictions.
The joint statement further vowed continued action against entities in China and other countries that aid Russia’s military, including financial institutions and those helping Russia acquire defense supplies.
They vowed to implement restrictions to prevent misuse and limit access to their financial systems. Notably, China is accused of helping Russia increasing military manufacturing by American officials.
Exports such as semiconductors, materials and machine tools are allowing Moscow to ramp up production of tanks, munitions and armored vehicles.
