Bharat and the United States have forged a closer partnership aimed at enhancing cooperation in crucial sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. The agreement came during a high-level meeting led by Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in New Delhi.
A new strategic semiconductor partnership was launched between General Atomics and 3rdiTech. This collaboration aims to co-develop semiconductor design and manufacturing processes focused on precision-guided ammunition and other national security electronics platforms. Semiconductors are vital for defense, automobiles, telecommunications, and have become a key area of international competition.
Boosting Semiconductor Manufacturing in Bharat
Bharat recently approved proposals for three semiconductor fabrication plants, marking a significant step towards bolstering its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. These projects, with an estimated investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore, are expected to significantly contribute to India’s electronics manufacturing sector. Tata Electronics, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd, and CG Power are among the key players involved in these ventures.
Both countries have also agreed to ensure a reliable supply of critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies and other industries. This includes initiatives such as co-investing in lithium resource projects in South America and rare earths deposits in Africa. The partnership aims to diversify critical mineral supply chains in a responsible and sustainable manner.
Bharat and the US are set to establish an Advanced Materials R&D Forum to expand collaboration between universities, national laboratories, and private sector researchers. This forum will facilitate joint efforts in advancing research and development in critical areas such as advanced materials and technologies.
Exploration and Collaboration in Critical Minerals
The two nations have committed to deepening industrial and commercial coordination in critical mineral supply chains. This includes bilateral collaboration in technologies for minerals like Neodymium-iron-boron and research studies for beneficiation of minerals such as lithium, titanium, gallium, and vanadium.
Collaboration between geological survey agencies of both countries on exploration and evaluation of rare earth elements and critical mineral deposits is also planned.
The agreement underscores the growing strategic partnership between Bharat and the US in crucial sectors that are pivotal for national security and technological advancement. This collaborative effort not only aims to strengthen bilateral ties but also to foster innovation and economic growth in both countries.
