Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on his West Bengal Counterpart Mamata Banerjee to transfer the investigation of IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed’s death to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This request follows alarming findings from a recent forensic report.
The second forensic report, conducted under the direction of the Calcutta High Court, revealed that Ahmed had a gunshot wound on the upper left side of his neck and a stab wound on the right side. The Assam CM asserted in his letter, released to the press on Tuesday, the urgency of bringing the perpetrators and anyone involved in concealing the crime to justice.
In his letter, CM Himanta stressed the need for a transparent and fair investigation by the CBI to ensure justice for Ahmed and closure for his grieving parents. He had previously appealed to Banerjee in October 2022 for a thorough investigation into the student’s unnatural death.
Faizan Ahmed, 23, a third-year mechanical engineering student from Assam’s Tinsukia district, was found dead in his hostel room on October 14, 2022. While IIT-Kharagpur authorities initially declared his death a suicide, Ahmed’s parents disputed this, citing injury marks on his body.
Ahmed’s mother subsequently petitioned the Calcutta High Court in May 2023 for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe her son’s death. In response, the court ordered the exhumation of Ahmed’s remains and a second post-mortem to uncover the truth behind his demise.
CM Himanta’s appeal for a CBI probe aims to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation into this tragic incident.
