In alignment with pre-election commitments, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced plans to prioritise the sale and processing of ginger. During a meeting with ministers and officials, the CM outlined the government’s flagship programme aimed at supporting ginger and other key crops.
CM Lalduhoma affirmed the government’s dedication to purchasing four specific crop types, with harvesting set to begin in six months. He urged officials to make necessary preparations to meet this timeline and asserted on the importance of addressing issues faced by areca nut farmers.
Looking ahead, Lalduhoma projected that Mizoram would harvest 1 million quintals of ginger in the coming year. He detailed plans to leverage the free market for ginger sales while implementing measures to support farmers. One such measure includes considering a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for ginger from January to May to ensure stable income for farmers.
Besides, the meeting tackled concerns regarding the sale of lower-grade ginger. It was decided that the government would collaborate with private companies to manage this issue, ensuring that all ginger, regardless of quality, finds a market.
In response to challenges faced by areca nut farmers, the CM proposed establishing an areca nut processing plant in Mizoram. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution for processing and selling areca nuts, thus improving the livelihoods of the farmers involved in its cultivation.
