In an incident on Monday evening, Madhuri, the daughter of Beeda Masthan Rao, a Rajya Sabha MP from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), allegedly ran over a man with her BMW in Chennai. The victim, 21-year-old Surya, a painter, was sleeping on a pavement in Besant Nagar when the car hit him, Surya succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Madhuri was arrested by the Chennai police but was released on station bail the next day. The police have registered a case under section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with causing death by negligence, a bailable offense.
As per the reports, the speeding BMW ran over Surya, who was asleep on the pavement. Madhuri and another woman accompanying her fled the scene immediately. Some local residents took Surya to the hospital, but he could not be saved. The police identified the car through CCTV footage and confirmed it belonged to the BMR Group, owned by Madhuri’s father, Beeda Masthan Rao. The car was registered in Puducherry.
Surya had been married for only eight months, and his death sparked outrage among his relatives and neighbors. They gathered at the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station, demanding justice. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the consequences of negligent driving.
This incident comes less than a month after another high-profile hit-and-run case in Pune. On May 19, a teenage driver crashed his Porsche into a motorbike, killing two young software professionals in the Kalyani Nagar area. The teenager is currently held in an observation home in Pune.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, a 41-year-old man named Kedar Chavan was killed in Pune. His motorcycle skidded, and he was run over by a Mercedes-Benz driven by a doctor’s driver. The accident occurred on Golf Course Road in the Yerawada area. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Kedar could not survive his injuries.
These incidents highlight the severe consequences of reckless and negligent driving, bringing to the forefront the need for stricter road safety measures. The victims’ families and the public are calling for justice and accountability for those responsible.
