The Sikkim administration successfully evacuated 1,225 tourists on the second day of rescue operations from Lachung and surrounding areas amidst challenging conditions.
Evacuation efforts commenced at 8 am on June 19, led by ADM Mangan, with 1,225 tourists safely reaching Mangan. Under the guidance of District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri and with coordinated efforts from ADM Mangan Vishu Lama, SP Mangan Sonam Detchu Bhutia, BDO Mangan Kailash Thapa, and officials from various departments including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local panchayats, and volunteers, tourists were escorted through hazardous terrain and landslides with utmost caution.
The Motor Vehicle Division under the Transport department provided vehicles to facilitate safe passage wherever roads permitted.
Grateful for their safe rescue, tourists expressed heartfelt thanks to the state government, administration, BRO, NDRF, SDRF, and local communities for their support and care during the evacuation.
As weather conditions permit, preparations are underway for potential air evacuations, with six MI helicopters on standby at Bagdogra. The district administration remains vigilant and prepared to address any further challenges that may arise.
The Trishakti Corps has been actively collaborating in the evacuation efforts since June 12 and 13, providing crucial support to civil administration operations amid multiple landslides, ensuring tourists are transported safely by foot and vehicle wherever feasible.
