Union Minister S. Jaishankar is set to visit Sri Lanka on June 20. This information was shared by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. During this visit, Jaishankar will meet with Sri Lankan leaders to discuss various important issues that concern both countries.
This visit is significant as it is Jaishankar’s first bilateral trip after the new government was formed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The MEA highlighted that this visit reaffirms India’s strong commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy, emphasizing the importance of Sri Lanka as India’s closest maritime neighbor and a long-standing friend.
The MEA stated that Jaishankar’s visit aims to boost ongoing connectivity projects and enhance cooperation in various sectors that benefit both countries. This visit is expected to strengthen the bond between India and Sri Lanka, promoting mutual growth and development.
Jaishankar, a key leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has played a crucial role in shaping India’s foreign policy during Prime Minister Modi’s second term. He resumed his duties at the Ministry of External Affairs last week after taking the oath as Union Cabinet Minister at the swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 9.
At 69 years old, Jaishankar has been a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat since 2019. He is known for his sharp intelligence and excellent oratory skills, which have often put him in the spotlight.
Before becoming the External Affairs Minister in 2019, he served as India’s Foreign Secretary from 2015 to 2018. Remarkably, he is the first Foreign Secretary to later become the External Affairs Minister.
Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka is a testament to the strong and friendly relations between India and Sri Lanka. It underscores India’s commitment to supporting its neighbors and working together for mutual benefits. This visit is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation and stronger ties between the two countries.
