The Supreme Court has issued a notice regarding a plea from the National Testing Agency (NTA) seeking to transfer petitions concerning the NEET-UG 2024 examination from various High Courts to the apex court. The plea aims to consolidate the cases for a more streamlined judicial process.

A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath has temporarily halted proceedings in different High Courts. Despite the ongoing legal disputes, the Supreme Court emphasized that it will not interrupt the counselling process for the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

The Supreme Court has also addressed a separate petition filed by students who took the NEET-UG exam at the Meghalaya centre. These students claimed they lost 45 minutes during the test and requested to be included among the 1,563 candidates who were awarded grace marks and given the option to retake the exam on June 23. Notices have been issued to both the Centre and the NTA in response to this petition.

The court has scheduled a hearing for these matters on July 8.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam was held on May 5, with results announced on June 4, ahead of the initially planned date of June 14. The early announcement sparked protests due to alleged irregularities and paper leaks, notably as 67 students achieved perfect scores of 720. Consequently, numerous petitions were filed by students seeking a retest.

The Supreme Court has sanctioned a retest for over 1,500 students who were given grace marks due to examination disruptions. The NTA informed the court on June 13 that the scorecards for these candidates would be voided, offering them the chance to retake the exam on June 23 or accept the compensatory marks provided earlier.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court underscored the importance of strict adherence to examination protocols. A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and SVN Bhatti instructed the representatives of the Centre and NTA to ensure that even the slightest negligence in conducting the NEET-UG 2024 examination would be addressed with utmost seriousness.
