Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan revealed on June 20 that the UGC-NET exam was cancelled after it was discovered that the question paper had been leaked on the darknet. The darknet, a concealed part of the internet inaccessible by standard search engines, enables anonymous transactions, often using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Addressing a press conference, Pradhan stated, “Once it was confirmed that the UGC-NET question paper on the darknet matched the original, we decided to cancel the examination.” The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the UGC-NET exam on Wednesday night, following reports indicating potential issues with the June 18 exam.

Pradhan emphasized the government’s commitment to error-free exams and announced the formation of a high-level committee to improve the NTA’s structure and transparency. Amid criticism for both the UGC-NET and NEET exams, Pradhan assured that all involved in the security breach would be punished.

The minister also mentioned ongoing investigations into the alleged NEET UG 2024 paper leak. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP and RSS for dominating educational institutions, blaming them for the paper leaks. Student unions have demanded Pradhan’s resignation, with several protesters detained outside the Ministry of Education and Pradhan’s residence.
