On Thursday, the Delhi court granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in the excise policy case. Kejriwal, who had returned to Tihar jail on June 2 after his interim bail ended, has been in jail for three months since his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21.
Following the bail announcement, AAP members and allies expressed their joy. Delhi minister Atishi shared her excitement on X (formerly Twitter) by posting “Satyameva Jayate.” AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who had also been arrested in the same case but was granted bail on April 4, stated that Kejriwal’s release would strengthen democracy.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized the significance of the court’s decision, calling it a milestone for the entire country. Bharadwaj noted that in cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), relief is typically granted only by the Supreme Court, making the lower court’s decision noteworthy.
Support also came from AAP’s allies in the INDIA bloc. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi welcomed Kejriwal back on X. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Supriyo Bhattacharya expressed his belief in the judicial system and hoped for a new direction in politics. Nationalist Congress Party leader Clyde Crasto echoed these sentiments, affirming that Kejriwal’s bail restored faith in democracy and the judicial process.

However, BJP leader Manjinder Sirsa mocked AAP’s celebration of the bail decision, stating that getting bail does not equate to being cleared of charges. Sirsa reminded that many arrested for corruption receive bail and argued that the court had sufficient evidence to initially send Kejriwal to jail. He insisted that receiving bail did not prove Kejriwal’s innocence or imply bias in the court’s earlier decisions.
The court’s decision to grant bail to Kejriwal marks a significant moment in the ongoing excise policy case, drawing reactions from across the political spectrum and highlighting the contentious nature of the charges against him.
