Former US President Donald Trump, known for his strong stance against illegal immigration, has suggested a new policy regarding foreign students. On Thursday, during an episode of the All-In podcast, Trump said that foreign students who graduate from American colleges should automatically receive a green card. This would allow them to stay in the United States after finishing their studies.
Keeping Bright Minds in the US
Trump emphasized the importance of keeping talented individuals in the country, he believes that giving green cards to these graduates would benefit the United States. “You graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country, and that includes junior colleges too,” Trump said.
This idea came up during a conversation on the All-In podcast, which is hosted by several venture capitalists. The host asked Trump if he would support a policy to bring the best and brightest minds from around the world to America. Trump’s response was clear: he supports making it easier for these talented individuals to stay in the US.
Trump’s Historical Immigration Stance
Trump’s suggestion is notable because of his history with immigration policies. During his presidency, he often spoke harshly about illegal immigration. In recent, he criticized current President Joe Biden for not reducing the number of migrants crossing the border illegally. Trump has also promised that if he is re-elected, he will carry out mass deportations, end birthright citizenship, and reinstate a ban on people from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Throughout his presidency, Trump promised to build a wall along the US-Mexico border to stop illegal immigration. By the end of his term, 452 miles of the wall had been built.
Unclear Application to Illegal Immigrants
It is not clear if Trump’s new suggestion would apply to those who came to the US illegally. However, he shared stories of people who graduated from top colleges in the US and wanted to stay and start businesses but couldn’t because of immigration issues. “Somebody graduates at the top of the class, they can’t even make a deal with a company because they don’t think they’re going to be able to stay in the country. That is going to end on day one,” Trump said.
Trump’s proposal to grant green cards to foreign graduates of US colleges is a significant shift from his usual tough stance on immigration. This idea aims to retain talented individuals who can contribute to the country’s growth and innovation. As Trump continues to campaign for re-election, this policy suggestion may become a key part of his platform.
