The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) 2024, India’s pivotal medical entrance exam, has been marred by a massive scandal centered in Gujarat. The controversy erupted on May 5th when authorities raided a NEET exam center in Godhra, exposing a sophisticated cheating operation.
The scam involved a nexus between the Roy Overseas Coaching Institute in Vadodara and officials at the Jay Jalaram School exam center.
According to investigations, students were instructed to leave questions unanswered during the exam, with bribes paid to teachers who later filled in the correct answers. This manipulation exploited the time delay between the exam’s end and the collection of answer sheets, enabling the coaching institute to provide answers within minutes.
Several arrests have been made, including Parshuram Roy of the coaching institute, school principal Purshottam Sharma, and others implicated in facilitating the scam. Financially, the fraud involved exorbitant sums, with parents reportedly paying up to Rs 2 crore to secure success for their children through illicit means.
The fallout extends beyond Gujarat, involving students from multiple states. The scandal has provoked national outrage, emphasizing the urgency of ensuring exam integrity. Authorities are now collaborating to identify all beneficiaries of the cheating racket.
As India demands justice, the focus remains on preventing such incidents in future exams, underscoring the need for stringent measures to uphold fairness and transparency in educational assessments.
