The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has increased to 53, officials announced on Saturday. This incident occurred in Tamil Nadu, where many people fell ill after consuming illicit liquor.
Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth provided updates, revealing that out of the 193 patients who consumed the toxic liquor, 140 are currently in stable condition. However, some of the affected individuals are still on ventilators. “Right now, 53 people have passed away,” he stated.
The authorities responded quickly to the crisis. “193 people who have consumed illicit liquor have come to the hospital. Out of 193, 140 are currently safe, while few of them are on ventilators,” said the Collector. To ensure the best possible care, special doctors were mobilized in the early stages of the incident. About 56 doctors from different medical colleges were brought in to help. Many patients who initially had respiratory problems have since recovered.
7 individuals have been arrested in connection with this case, the investigation has been handed over to the CBI CID branch of the Tamil Nadu Police. The move is aimed at ensuring a thorough and impartial probe into the tragic incident.
Responding, a significant amount of illicit liquor was seized in Tiruchirapalli district. On Friday night, acting on an intelligence tip, Tiruchirapalli District Collector Pradeep Kumar and Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar confiscated and disposed of 250 litres of illicit liquor.
District Collector Pradeep Kumar also engaged with residents, informing them about the dangers of consuming illicit liquor. He encouraged the locals to take an oath pledging not to consume such dangerous substances in the future.

The Kallakurichi Hooch tragedy has sparked significant political reactions. During a session in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, members of the opposition AIADMK demanded a discussion on the incident, raising slogans and causing a commotion in the assembly.
This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of illicit liquor consumption and has prompted swift actions from local authorities and the state government to prevent further occurrences.
