The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday that recent satellite images indicate light to moderate rainfall in many regions. Some areas will also experience intense spells of rain along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next few hours. This forecast promises much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave.
As per the IMD, light to moderate rain is expected in many places. West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to see occasional intense rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds within the next three hours.
Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is forecasted for several other regions. These include Vidarbha and adjoining north Telangana, east Telangana, Rayalaseema, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, southeast Rajasthan, East Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. These areas will also experience isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds during the same period.
The IMD reiterated that West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will see significant rainfall with occasional intense spells and isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next three hours.
On Sunday afternoon, a fresh spell of rainfall brought relief to Delhi residents who had been enduring a severe heatwave for the past two months. The weather department anticipates the monsoon to arrive in Delhi-NCR around June 30.
The intense heatwave had significantly increased Delhi’s power demand. Data from the State Load Dispatch Centre revealed that at 3:22 PM on June 18, Delhi’s peak power demand reached an all-time high of 8,647 MW.
On June 17, 2024, the Ministry of Power reported that the Northern Region alone recorded its highest peak power demand of 89 GW. Despite the extreme heatwave, this demand was successfully met, highlighting the strain the heatwave placed on the power grid.
The IMD’s forecast of rainfall provides a hopeful respite from the intense heat and high power demands experienced recently across various parts of India.
