The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha started on Monday with a significant controversy over the appointment of the pro-tem speaker. BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab was chosen for the role, bypassing Congress member K Suresh, which has led to strong opposition from Congress.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem speaker in a solemn event at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Following the ceremony, Mahtab convened the Lok Sabha session at 11 am, beginning with a moment of silence. The Lok Sabha Secretary General, Utpal Kumar Singh, then presented the list of elected members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took his oath as a member of Parliament during this session.
On June 27, President Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. The discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address will commence on June 28, with Prime Minister Modi expected to address the debate around July 2 or 3. Both Houses will adjourn briefly and reconvene on July 22 for the presentation of the Union Budget.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed optimism about the upcoming session. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rijiju stated he was looking forward to ensuring smooth coordination to run Parliament effectively. He welcomed all newly elected members and assured them of his availability for assistance as the minister of parliamentary affairs.
The 18th Lok Sabha’s first session began with significant developments, from the appointment of the pro-tem speaker to the swearing-in of MPs and the President’s forthcoming address. Despite controversies and anticipated debates on key issues, the government and opposition are set for an eventful session, reflecting the dynamic nature of India’s parliamentary proceedings.
