An incident in Tamil Nadu has resulted in the deaths of 57 people who consumed illicit liquor. The latest update, released by the district administration on Monday, reports that 156 people are currently receiving treatment in various government hospitals across the state.
Among those hospitalized, 110 individuals are being treated at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital. Twelve people are in the hospital in Puducherry, 20 in Salem, and four in Viluppuram government hospitals. Despite the severity of the situation, seven people, including five men and two women, have recovered and been discharged, according to the Kallakurichi District Magistrate.
The fatalities are spread across multiple hospitals: 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, 18 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem, four at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital, and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that the state government will cover all educational and hostel expenses for children who have lost one or both parents due to the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy.
For children who have lost both parents, the government will provide Rs 5000 monthly assistance until they turn 18, and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited in their names as a fixed deposit. This amount can be withdrawn with interest when they reach 18. Similarly, for children who have lost one parent, Rs 3 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit.
The Chief Minister also stated that these children will be given priority in all government welfare schemes. This move aims to provide some relief and support to the families affected by this devastating event.
The Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) of Tamil Nadu police has taken charge of the investigation. SP Shantharam is leading the probe, seven people have been arrested in connection with the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, as reported by the Kallakurichi Collector.
This incident has highlighted the severe consequences of illicit liquor consumption and the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The state government is taking steps to provide relief to the affected families and ensure that justice is served.
