South Korea is on high alert as it anticipates a change in wind direction on Monday that could facilitate North Korea’s launch of balloons carrying trash across the border. This comes amidst a recent escalation of psychological warfare between the two nations.
Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a significant defense agreement, raising concerns that Kim may intensify provocations against South Korea.
North Korea’s response has included launching balloons into South Korea carrying items like manure, cigarette butts, and scraps of cloth since late May. These actions are seen as retaliation for South Korean activists’ distribution of anti-North Korean propaganda via balloons.
South Korean military spokesperson Lee Sung Joon stated that they are closely monitoring North Korean movements, particularly due to favorable wind conditions for balloon launches expected on Monday.
Tensions Escalate with Propaganda Balloons
Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister and influential figure in North Korea, issued a warning of retaliation after South Korean activists sent propaganda-laden balloons across the border. She hinted at potential further balloon launches from North Korea.
Responding to North Korea’s balloon campaign, South Korea recently reinstated loudspeaker broadcasts along the border after six years. These broadcasts include K-pop music, weather forecasts, news updates on South Korean companies like Samsung, and criticism of North Korea’s policies.
North Korea perceives such broadcasts and balloon activities as serious provocations, often responding with artillery fire across the border, though no casualties have been reported in recent incidents.
In a joint statement, South Korea, the United States, and Japan strongly condemned the growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. They expressed deep concern about its implications for peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula, global non-proliferation efforts, and support for Ukraine.
The agreement between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, promising mutual aid in case of attack and enhanced cooperation, marks a significant strengthening of ties between North Korea and Russia since the Cold War.

To counter these developments, the US reaffirmed its commitment to defending South Korea and Japan, emphasizing the continuation of joint military exercises. A US aircraft carrier recently arrived in South Korea for a joint military exercise involving Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.
The situation remains tense as both military and diplomatic efforts are mobilized to prevent further escalation. North Korea’s actions, including missile tests in response to joint military drills, continue to exacerbate regional tensions.
While South Korea prepares for potential provocations, international allies are closely monitoring developments and strategizing on how to maintain stability in the region amid these heightened tensions.
