In what appeared to be a “coordinated terrorist attack”, gunmen opened fire on churches and synagogues in two of the Russian cities in the southernmost Dagestan province on Sunday, killing at least 15 police officers, a priest, and four civilians. Following this, the security forces eliminated six militants in counter-attacks, the head of the Dagestan Republic, Sergey Melikov stated. Blaming Ukraine and the US-led NATO for being behind the attacks, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee described the attacks as “terrorist acts”. Significantly, the attacks took place in a predominantly Muslim region that has a history of armed militancy.
