On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court ordered the release of a minor accused in the Pune Porsche accident case. The court declared the previous remand order as illegal and set it aside. This decision comes after a 17-year-old was allegedly involved in a severe accident in May, where a Porsche he was driving crashed into a bike, injuring two software engineers in Pune.
Initially, the teenager was quickly granted bail following the accident. However, this led to significant public outcry, resulting in the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) remanding him. This remand decision was challenged in the High Court.
A bench comprising Justices Bharti Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande reviewed the case. They acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the accident but emphasized that keeping the minor in an observation home was not justified. The court ruled that the minor’s detention was illegal and ordered the JJB to release him immediately.
Given the current situation of the minor’s family, where his parents and grandfather are behind bars, the court has decided to place the teenager in the custody of his paternal aunt. This arrangement is intended to ensure the minor is under proper care and supervision.

The court’s decision has sparked discussions about the treatment of juveniles in the legal system, particularly in cases involving serious accidents. While the accident was indeed tragic, the court highlighted the importance of handling juvenile cases with a focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
This case has drawn significant public and media attention, raising questions about road safety, juvenile justice, and the responsibilities of guardians.
