India’s Deputy Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra, criticized Pakistan for what he termed as “baseless” and “politically motivated” remarks regarding Jammu and Kashmir during a recent UN Security Council debate. Ravindra asserted that Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India, dismissing Pakistan’s statements as attempts to divert attention from serious child rights violations within Pakistan.
During the Children and Armed Conflict debate, Ravindra highlighted the longstanding challenges children face in conflict zones, emphasizing the need for global efforts to prevent violations against them. He noted the significance of Security Council Resolution 1261, which addresses children affected by armed conflict, urging stronger protections and actions against terrorist groups perpetrating abuses.
The Indian envoy expressed deep concern over the escalating threats to children in conflict areas, attributing a majority of violations to terrorists and armed groups. He underscored the importance of governments in safeguarding children’s rights and called for enhanced international cooperation to combat indoctrination and violence against children.
Ravindra emphasized the crucial role of education and skill development in mitigating the impact of conflict on children, advocating for digital tools to support their education and psychosocial well-being. He also stressed the need to prioritize the protection of schools and healthcare facilities, he highlighted the challenges of relocating and reintegrating child victims of armed conflict.
