The Lok Sabha session on Friday came to an abrupt halt as Opposition members pushed for an adjournment motion to discuss the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Speaker Om Birla declined the motion, citing an upcoming discussion on the Motion of Thanks. Despite attempts to proceed, the uproar persisted, leading to the House’s adjournment till July 1.
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi emphasized the need for a discussion on NEET in Parliament. He highlighted the unanimous demand from opposition leaders for a dedicated debate on the issue, stressing its importance for the youth.
In response to the Opposition’s demand, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed the government’s readiness for detailed discussions on NEET and other pertinent issues. He condemned the disruption of House proceedings by the Congress party, urging cooperation for productive parliamentary sessions.
The Opposition reiterated its stance on the necessity of discussing NEET to convey solidarity with students across the country.
Amidst the controversy surrounding NEET, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated a criminal investigation into alleged irregularities during the NEET (UG) 2024 examination. The investigation follows reports of anomalies in the conduct of the exam, which saw an unprecedented number of perfect scores and subsequent protests nationwide.
The Ministry of Education has formed a high-level committee to propose reforms in exam procedures and data security measures under the National Testing Agency (NTA).
