The Janata Dal (United), a prominent political party in India, recently held a national executive meeting where they made a significant decision. Sanjay Kumar Jha, a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, was appointed as the party’s working president. However, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will continue to serve as the national president of the party.
Sanjay Jha’s appointment is considered important due to his positive relationship with the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jha is also the JD(U) leader in the Rajya Sabha. Party insiders believe that Jha’s connections with the BJP will help secure favorable deals and maintain a friendly relationship between the two parties, despite their past differences.
Addressing Exam Paper Leaks and Seeking Special Package for Bihar
During the meeting, the JD(U) emphasized the need for strict action against those involved in exam paper leaks. The party called for the implementation of strong laws to prevent such incidents in the future. In addition, the national executive passed a resolution demanding special category status or a special financial package from the central government for Bihar.
The meeting in Delhi saw the participation of several senior leaders, including Bihar CM and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, Union ministers Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, among others. This gathering underscored the party’s commitment to addressing pressing issues and strengthening its organizational structure.
Political Alliances and Election Performance
Nitish Kumar, who had rejoined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and took oath as Bihar CM with the BJP’s support in August 2022, led the JD(U) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP. The BJP-led NDA performed well, winning 29 out of the 40 seats in Bihar.

Both the BJP and JD(U) won 12 seats each, while the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured all five seats it contested. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress won four and three seats, respectively.
The appointment of Sanjay Jha as the working president of JD(U) and the party’s resolutions on key issues reflect its strategic planning and focus on strengthening political alliances. With significant support from the BJP, JD(U) aims to address critical issues in Bihar and enhance its political influence at the national level.
