A disturbing video circulating on social media has captured a harrowing incident in West Bengal, where a woman was brutally beaten with bamboo sticks by a man in full public view. The assault, which left the woman severely injured and unable to defend herself, drew widespread condemnation and sparked outrage across the state.
The video, which quickly went viral, shows the woman being repeatedly struck by the assailant, identified as a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader known as ‘JCB’ or Tajemul. Shockingly, bystanders present at the scene did not intervene to stop the merciless attack, raising serious questions about societal apathy and law enforcement.
Political figures, including BJP’s Amit Malviya and CPI(M)’s Mohammed Salim, were quick to criticize the Mamata Banerjee-led government for failing to ensure the safety of women in West Bengal. They condemned the incident as emblematic of a deteriorating law and order situation under the TMC regime, calling for swift and decisive action against the perpetrators.
.@WBPolice should stop making legal demands on X asking this video to be removed from users’ timeline. Incidents of atrocities all across West Bengal can be checked, if instead of spending all the time on covering up for Mamata Banerjee, the police focused on their job. https://t.co/YyNqw0YLXm

Tajemul, the alleged perpetrator seen in the video, is also shown assaulting another man who was lying defenseless on the ground. Reports suggest the incident occurred during an ‘Insaf Sabha’ organized by Tajemul, resembling a makeshift forum for quick justice reminiscent of Taliban-style proceedings.
The victims, accused of having an extramarital affair, were reportedly subjected to a fine as part of this alleged arbitration.
In response to the public outcry, West Bengal Police have registered a case and initiated raids to apprehend Tajemul. Islampur Police Superintendent Joby Thomas K confirmed that investigations are underway to ascertain the motive behind the brutal assault and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has ignited a fierce political debate, with opposition parties BJP and CPI(M) accusing the TMC of perpetrating what they describe as “bulldozer justice” under Mamata Banerjee’s administration.
BJP’s Malviya condemned the incident as reflective of Sharia-like courts operating unchecked in West Bengal, urging national bodies like the National Commission for Women (NCW) to intervene.
CPI(M)’s Mohammed Salim echoed these sentiments, lambasting the state government for failing to uphold justice and protect women’s rights. He criticized the incident as worse than a Kangaroo Court, demanding accountability from the administration for its alleged inaction and negligence.
While TMC MLA Hamidur Rahman distanced himself from Tajemul, describing the incident as a localized matter, TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal acknowledged community disapproval towards the victims’ alleged relationship.

However, TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen condemned the incident while drawing attention to similar incidents occurring during the Left Front regime.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also weighed in, condemning separate incidents of violence against women in the state, questioning the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens post-election.
As tensions escalate and demands for justice mount, the spotlight remains firmly on Mamata Banerjee’s administration to address systemic failures in governance and law enforcement, underscoring the urgency for concrete measures to restore public trust and ensure safety across West Bengal.
