On Monday, the newly-appointed Indian Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, assured the nation that the Indian Army is fully prepared to face all current and future security challenges. His statement comes amid ongoing tensions with China in the eastern Ladakh region.
Gen Dwivedi emphasized the importance of ensuring synergy among the Army, Air Force, and Navy as a key priority. This collaborative approach is aimed at strengthening India’s overall defense capabilities.
After inspecting a guard of honor at South Block in Raisina Hills, Gen Dwivedi highlighted the “unique operational challenges” faced by the Indian Army. He stressed the need to continuously equip soldiers with the latest weapons and technology to stay prepared for any threats.
The Army Chief expressed his commitment to boosting self-reliance in defense by encouraging the induction of indigenously built military hardware. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of making the Indian Army ‘Atmanirbhar’ or self-reliant in defense.
Gen Dwivedi noted that the geopolitical landscape is rapidly changing, and technology is evolving quickly. To address these changes, the Indian Army must evolve its war-fighting strategies and continuously upgrade its equipment and technology.
Under Gen Dwivedi’s leadership, the Indian Army is on a “path to transformation” with aspirations to achieve self-reliance in defense. This involves encouraging indigenous initiatives and maximizing the use of domestically manufactured war systems and equipment.
Gen Dwivedi committed to ensuring that the Indian Army is ready to operate across the “full spectrum of conflict.” He emphasized maintaining complete synergy with the Indian Navy, Air Force, and other stakeholders to secure India’s interests and contribute to nation-building.
Expressing his pride in leading the Indian Army, Gen Dwivedi paid tribute to the soldiers’ legacy of valor and sacrifice. He reiterated his commitment to protecting the interests of all Army personnel and supporting ex-servicemen and their families.
Gen Dwivedi assured that the welfare of all ranks and defense civilians in the Indian Army would be a top priority. He also promised full support to veterans, ‘veer naris’ (war widows), and their families, viewing this responsibility as a sacred commitment.

An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa (MP), Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984. He has extensive command and staff experience across various operational environments in Northern, Eastern, and Western theaters.
Before becoming the Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army and the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command.
