Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi faced criticism for displaying images of Lord Shiva, Guru Nanak, and Jesus Christ in the Lok Sabha, claiming the opposition follows their values. Speaker Om Birla strongly objected, citing it as a violation of House rules.
During the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, included sharp attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He accused the BJP of spreading fear, hatred, and falsehoods, contrasting this with the non-violence and resilience taught by religious figures. “Those who call themselves Hindu (BJP) only talk about violence, hatred, and untruth. Aap Hindu ho hi nahi,” Gandhi stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened, asserting that labeling the entire Hindu society as violent is a serious issue. Gandhi responded, claiming the BJP do not represent the entire Hindu community.
Gandhi’s act of displaying religious images was intended to emphasize the opposition’s commitment to non-violence and fearlessness, values he attributed to all religions, including Islam and Sikhism. However, Speaker Birla upheld the parliamentary rules against displaying placards, urging Gandhi to adhere to them.
Gandhi’s actions and remarks sparked controversy, with critics arguing that his display of religious symbols was inappropriate and violated parliamentary decorum. His accusations against the BJP also fueled further political tension.
