Several states, including the national capital Delhi, are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall today, accompanied by thunderstorms. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for July 2 and July 3. From July 3 to 5, the IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with continued moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
In Delhi, the minimum temperature today is likely to be around 31 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. However, during the day, the temperature is expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of approximately 4.74 km/h.
The IMD also tweeted that Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch regions, along with the southern part of the state, are expected to receive rain during the early hours of the day. Heavy rains have already battered Gujarat for the second consecutive day on July 1. Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhumi Dwarka district received 174 mm of rainfall until 6 pm, as reported by PTI.
Delhi recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall on Friday, marking the highest rainfall for June since 1936. This intense rainfall has resulted in several rain-related incidents. On Saturday, six rain-related deaths were reported, raising the total number of fatalities to 11 in the first two days since the monsoon arrived.
Responding to these torrential rains and the resulting casualties, Delhi Water Minister and AAP leader Atishi announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs for the families of those who lost their lives due to the rain. The Water Minister, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the release of Delhi’s share of water from Haryana, took to social media platform X to make the announcement.
She stated, “Several deaths have been reported on 28th June, after extreme rainfall of 228mm in 24 hours. The families of all those who lost their lives will be given a compensation of ₹10 lakhs. Directions have been given that this compensation reaches the grieving families speedily.”
As the monsoon season continues, residents in affected areas must take necessary precautions. The IMD’s forecast of continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms suggests that further disruptions and hazards may occur. Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and to follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.
