The Indian Army announced that the 16th edition of the Joint Military Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ between India and Mongolia will take place in Umroi, Meghalaya, from July 3 to July 16, 2024. This exercise aims to improve the cooperation and interoperability between the two armies in conducting semi-conventional operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain.
The Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army), shared on social media platform X that the exercise will be conducted under the United Nations mandate. This annual training event alternates between being held in Mongolia and India.
Last year, the 15th edition took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. During the 2023 exercise, soldiers from the Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084 and the Indian Army’s Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment participated.
In addition to the upcoming exercise, a significant meeting took place in May 2024. The 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia was held in Ulaanbaatar on May 16-17.
During this meeting, officials reviewed progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and explored new ways to enhance cooperation. Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) Amitabh Prasad from India’s Ministry of Defence and Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj from Mongolia co-chaired the meeting. India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, also attended.
Both countries expressed satisfaction with the current state of their defence cooperation. They discussed the current geopolitical situation and highlighted the potential for future collaboration.
Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad emphasized the capabilities of the Indian defence industry and anticipated a successful partnership with Mongolia’s Armed Forces. The Mongolian representatives also acknowledged the strengths of the Indian defence industry.
The growing ties between India and Mongolia are evident through these joint exercises and meetings. The ‘Nomadic Elephant’ exercise provides an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their military collaboration and enhance their ability to operate together in challenging environments.
