Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi called with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit to Bangladesh. The meeting took place on July 2, 2024, during their discussion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her appreciation for India’s support during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971.
The Indian Navy shared details about the meeting on their official X account. They mentioned that Admiral Tripathi updated Prime Minister Hasina on the progress of ongoing maritime collaborations between the Indian Navy and the Bangladesh Navy.

Strengthening Naval Cooperation
Admiral Tripathi’s visit to Bangladesh is a four-day trip from July 1 to July 4, 2024. The main goal of this visit is to strengthen defence relations between India and Bangladesh and to explore new opportunities for cooperation between their navies.
According to a press release from the Indian Navy, Admiral Tripathi will have bilateral discussions with Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Chief of the Naval Staff of the Bangladesh Navy, in Dhaka. In addition, he will review the Passing Out Parade at the Bangladesh Naval Academy (BNA) in Chittagong on July 4, 2024.
Historical and Cultural Ties
India and Bangladesh share a deep bond that goes beyond just strategic partnerships. Their relationship is built on common history, language, culture, and other shared values. The strong bilateral ties between the two nations reflect a partnership based on mutual respect, trust, and understanding.
Over the years, the partnership has grown and evolved into a model for bilateral relations in the region and beyond. This close relationship is evident in the defence sector, where both countries have engaged in significant exchanges.
In 2023, there were important visits by military leaders from both countries. The Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff visited New Delhi from April 27 to 29, 2023. Following this visit, the Indian Chief of Army Staff visited Bangladesh in June 2023. He attended the Passing Out Parade at the Bangladesh Military Academy as the presiding officer.
These visits highlight the strong and growing defence cooperation between India and Bangladesh. Admiral Tripathi’s visit to Bangladesh is another step towards further consolidating this important relationship.
