US President Joe Biden, who is running for re-election, is facing criticism after a poor performance in the first presidential debate against his Republican challenger, Donald Trump. A report from the New York Times indicates that Biden is considering whether to stay in the race if he cannot convince the public that he is fit for the top job.
As per the report, Biden confided in a close ally that he realizes he might not be able to recover his candidacy if his next few public appearances do not go well. Despite this, the ally emphasized that Biden is still very much committed to his re-election campaign.
Biden has several important appearances coming up, including an interview on Friday with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News and campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The ally mentioned that Biden understands the importance of these events, stating, “He knows if he has two more events like that, we’re in a different place by the end of the weekend.”
The White House, however, denied the claims made in the article. Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman, called the allegations “absolutely false.”
During the June 27 debate with Trump, Biden’s verbal missteps and sometimes wandering answers increased voter concerns about his ability to serve another four-year term.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, one in three Democrats think Biden should withdraw from the race following the debate. However, the poll also suggests that no prominent elected Democrat performs better than Biden in a hypothetical matchup against Trump.
Biden’s campaign is now focused on making strong impressions in his upcoming appearances to reassure voters of his capability and commitment.
