The Indian cricket team landed in New Delhi on Thursday morning, arriving on a special Air India chartered plane from Barbados. The team’s arrival follows a three-day wait on the Caribbean island after their T20 World Cup triumph. Fans were excited as the BCCI shared a video of the players disembarking with the trophy.
A large group of fans gathered at the airport to welcome the cricket heroes. Captain Rohit Sharma led the team, proudly holding the trophy as he exited the airport. Star player Virat Kohli received a warm reception, waving to the crowd and acknowledging their support.
The team faced an unexpected delay in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, which shut down the airport for four days. Once the weather improved, Air India arranged a special chartered flight to bring the World Champions back home.
After a long journey of around 18 hours, the team finally landed in India. Fans had been waiting in long queues since late night to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars. Special arrangements were made for the team’s welcome both at the airport and the team hotel. These included a cake representing the World Cup Trophy and welcome drinks in the national tricolor.
Following their arrival, the team had a busy schedule ahead. They were set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 9:30 AM before flying to Mumbai for a special roadshow. The roadshow was planned to start from Nariman Point and conclude at Wankhede Stadium, where the entire team would be honored.
In Mumbai, the team was scheduled to drive from the airport to Wankhede Stadium, with a 1 km long bus parade to celebrate with fans. A small presentation was planned at the stadium, where Rohit Sharma would hand the World Cup to BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The team would then disperse in the evening.
India secured the T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final on Saturday. Rohit Sharma became only the second Indian captain, after MS Dhoni, to win the T20 World Cup. This victory ended an 11-year-long wait for an ICC trophy in men’s cricket. In the final match, India posted a total of 176 runs at Kensington Oval in Barbados, with Virat Kohli top-scoring with 76 runs.
The bowlers then took over, with South Africa needing just 30 runs off 30 balls at one point. However, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a crucial spell, helping India secure the victory.
After the triumph, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20 Internationals. This victory also marked the end of coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure.
The return of the team and their achievements brought immense joy and pride to Indian cricket fans, celebrating the end of a long wait for international glory.
