In preparation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) has announced the successful delivery of 35,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army. This achievement is part of a significant joint venture between India and Russia aimed at boosting India’s defense capabilities.
The production of these rifles has been carried out in India, aligning with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan (Self-Reliant India) initiatives. These programs aim to enhance domestic manufacturing and reduce dependency on foreign imports. The project not only includes the transfer of technology from Russia to India but also ensures that the entire production process is localized.
Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited, co-founded by ROSOBORONEXPORT on the Russian side, has completed the first phase of this ambitious project. To increase the level of localization, all necessary equipment was shipped to the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. According to Alexander Mikheev, Director General of ROSOBORONEXPORT, the production facilities are now fully equipped to manufacture the rifles.
The joint venture made it possible to produce and deliver a batch of 35,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Indian Army within the agreed timeframe with the Ministry of Defence of India. This timely delivery underscores the efficiency and commitment of the joint venture in meeting the defense needs of India.
The Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifle is an advanced version of the AK-200 series, designed to use the 7.62x39mm cartridge, which is standard in the Indian Army. Known for its reliability and ease of maintenance, the AK-203 retains the traditional strengths of Kalashnikov rifles.

High-Quality Manufacturing
Manufactured in India using exclusive Russian technologies on certified equipment, the AK-203 rifles maintain high product quality and meet the required performance standards. This collaboration ensures that the rifles are produced to the same specifications and standards as those made in Russia, providing the Indian Army with a reliable and effective weapon.
The successful delivery of 35,000 AK-203 rifles marks a significant milestone in Indo-Russian defense cooperation. It demonstrates the potential of joint ventures to enhance domestic production capabilities and support national initiatives for self-reliance in defense manufacturing. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Russia, this achievement highlights the strength of the partnership between the two nations in the defense sector.
