Russian Appreciation for Orban’s Efforts
On Monday, the Kremlin expressed its appreciation for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s efforts to understand the positions of Russia and Ukraine regarding their ongoing conflict. This recognition came after Orban held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, aiming to explore possibilities for a Ukrainian peace deal.
Orban’s initiative has stirred concerns among some European Union leaders. They are wary of any actions that might be perceived as appeasing Moscow, especially given the tense relations and ongoing conflict. Despite these concerns, Orban continues to pursue what he describes as a “peace mission.”
Meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping
As part of this mission, Orban met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday during an unexpected visit to Beijing. This meeting marked the third leg of his peace mission. However, it’s important to note that this initiative does not have the backing of the European Commission or Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commended Orban’s efforts, emphasizing that the Hungarian leader is making a serious attempt to understand the core disagreements between the parties involved in the conflict.
“There is a whole set of disagreements among the parties concerned, but at least Mr. Orban is making a very serious attempt to understand the essence of these disagreements, which is very much appreciated,” Peskov stated.

Orban’s peace mission will continue as he travels to Washington on Monday. His government announced that he would participate in the NATO summit scheduled for this week. Reporters questioned whether Putin had sent any messages through Orban to U.S. President Joe Biden and other NATO leaders, but Peskov denied this, stating that no such messages were sent.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s efforts to mediate and understand the Russia-Ukraine conflict highlight his unique position and determination to seek peace.
While his actions have not received universal support, especially from the European Commission and Ukraine, they have garnered appreciation from Russia. As Orban continues his mission, including attending the NATO summit, his role in the broader geopolitical landscape remains significant and closely watched.
