Schools in Pune and Mumbai will remain closed on Tuesday following a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) due to heavy rain across parts of Maharashtra.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced, “BMC has declared a holiday for all schools in Mumbai tomorrow, July 9, in light of the heavy rain warning issued by IMD.”
Similarly, Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase stated that all schools up to class 12 will be closed on Tuesday to prevent any emergencies. However, principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff are required to report to school during office hours to assist with disaster management efforts as directed by local authorities.
Schools in Raigad and Navi Mumbai will also remain shut on Tuesday due to the heavy rain warning. The Raigad collector’s office announced, “Due to the heavy rain warning (red alert) in Raigad district, all schools and colleges in Raigad have been declared a holiday on Tuesday, July 9.”
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Education (NMMC) Department has also declared a holiday for all government and private schools within its jurisdiction. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg for Monday. Additionally, the RMC has issued a red alert for Pune and Satara.
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Mumbai until July 12. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in other regions, including Palghar, Thane, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Sholapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal up to July 12.
