Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently completed a two-day visit to Russia, attending the 22nd India-Russia summit on July 8 and 9. During his visit, he held important discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reviewed bilateral ties, and addressed the Indian community in Moscow. The visit focused on strengthening cooperation in various sectors, including defense, investment, energy, education, and culture.
Highest Civilian Honour Conferred
One of the highlights of PM Modi’s visit was being awarded Russia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, by President Putin. This prestigious award, established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great, is given for outstanding civilian or military achievements. PM Modi’s recognition underscores the strong bond between India and Russia.
On Tuesday, PM Modi met with President Putin in Moscow for extensive discussions. During these talks, PM Modi emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict. He stressed that a solution cannot be found on the battlefield and that peace talks are vital.
His comments came in the wake of a tragic attack on a children’s hospital in Kyiv, which deeply moved him. “The loss of innocent children is heart-wrenching,” he stated, highlighting the human cost of the conflict. PM Modi assured the international community that India stands for peace and urged for a resolution through dialogue.
Engagement with the Indian Community
During his visit, PM Modi also interacted with the Indian community in Moscow. He spoke about India’s growing global influence and its role as a ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (World Friend). He praised the Indian diaspora for strengthening India-Russia relations and appreciated President Putin’s efforts in enhancing bilateral ties. “Our 17 meetings so far have built trust and respect between our nations,” he noted. PM Modi also announced the opening of new Indian consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg, further expanding diplomatic outreach.
