The Israeli government’s security cabinet has approved a plan to increase mandatory military service for men from 32 months to 36 months. This decision is set to remain in effect for the next eight years following a late-night meeting on Thursday.
The proposal is expected to be presented for a final vote during a full cabinet meeting scheduled for Sunday. Israeli military leaders argue that extending service is necessary to bolster manpower amid ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In addition, Israel plans to draft thousands of ultra-Orthodox seminary students who were previously exempt from military service, marking a significant policy shift.
These measures will enhance Israeli military capabilities amidst regional security challenges.
