In a scathing address, Water Resources Minister and Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLA Awangbow Newmai accused Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of exploiting the ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur for political gain. Newmai condemned Gandhi’s recent visit to Manipur, labeling it as deceitful and opportunistic amidst the state’s unrest.
Speaking at an event in Imphal to distribute government scheme benefits, Newmai highlighted the prolonged conflict between the Naga and Kuki tribes that began in 1993 and questioned the Congress party’s efforts during that period. “It is unfortunate that some leaders are politicizing the Manipur issue without addressing the root cause of ethnic tensions,” Newmai stated.

The NPF MLA from Tamei constituency emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to diagnose and treat the underlying issues causing unrest. “We must live together because, as much as you want peace, I also want peace. Instead of politicizing it, let us find the root cause together,” he urged.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had visited several areas in Manipur, including Jiribam, Churachandpur, Moirang, and Imphal, meeting with people in relief camps. Despite Gandhi’s assertions that he did not want to politicize the issue, Newmai criticized his lack of constructive suggestions and focus on photo opportunities. “Holding the hand of an aggrieved person in a relief camp and taking a photo will not bring peace unless we work together to find where it has really gone wrong,” Newmai remarked.
The Minister accused Congress leaders of failing to address the core issues, such as the 1993 conflict and the enactment of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), which grants sweeping powers to security forces in “disturbed areas.” He challenged Congress to express regret for their historical actions in parliament and bring forward constructive solutions.
Newmai also pointed out the ongoing challenges of illegal immigration and drug trafficking in Manipur, issues he claimed Gandhi did not address during his visits. “If they really want peace, give us constructive suggestions, and let’s work together to bring peace and understanding,” Newmai added.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit marked his third trip to Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, resulting in over 220 deaths and displacing nearly 50,000 people. The conflict primarily involves the valley-dominant Meitei community and various Kuki tribes seeking a separate administration.
Newmai’s address calls for genuine efforts toward peace and cooperation, urging political leaders to move beyond blame and photo opportunities to address the deep-seated issues plaguing Manipur.
