On Saturday, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported that China’s missile unit had conducted multiple test firings in Inner Mongolia, over 1,600 kilometers away from Taiwan. The ministry heightened its air force alertness in response to these activities. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has increased military actions around the island.
The Rocket Force of China, responsible for its missile arsenal, carried out the test firings. Details of the tests were not disclosed by Taiwan’s military news agency. These actions come amidst ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, with China frequently conducting military maneuvers near the self-ruled island.
Recently elected Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has expressed a desire for peace with China, urging an end to military threats and intimidation.
Despite these calls, China has continued to display military strength in the region, particularly since the US reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan’s defense.
The United States, although not formally recognizing Taiwan, is its primary ally and has legal obligations to support its defense. Just weeks ago, the US approved a $360 million sale of missiles and drones to Taiwan, underscoring its support amidst heightened regional tensions.
China’s recent military activities, including the deployment of numerous warplanes near Taiwan, reflect the ongoing geopolitical friction in East Asia.
