At the Oval Office United States President Joe Biden addressed the country on his predecessor Donald Trump’s assassination attempt at a political rally in Pennsylvania.
Joe Biden said that there is a need to calm down the political rhetoric of the country and asked for unity. In his address to the citizens of the US, President Biden recalled that any kind of power to change America must lie within the hands of people and not with would-be assassins. He further added that America resolves its differences at ballot box, and not with bullets.
‘Yesterday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back, take care of where we are, how we go forward from here’, said Joe Biden.
Biden strongly condemned the shooting and stressed that it is time to lower the temperature in our politics. He acknowledged many in the country have deeply felt, strong disagreements but said politics must be an arena for peaceful debate.
‘Violence is never the answer’, he said, listing recent attacks, including the assassination attempt. The president also sent well wishes to former United States President Donald Trump, and paid tribute to hero Corey Comperatore, 50, who was killed at the rally while protecting his family. He reiterated that key facts around the shooting like the motive and preparation behind it are still unknown.
But Joe Biden didn’t address criticism of him by some Republicans, who accuse him of amplifying rhetoric against Trump. However, he did mention the attack on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, and the riot at the Capitol on 6 January 2021 carried out by Trump supporters.
The President ended the speech on the importance of maintaining an American democracy where decency, dignity and fair play aren’t just quaint notions, but living breathing realities.
