External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s continued support to Mauritius, emphasizing the strong and multifaceted partnership between the two nations. Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Mauritius to engage in productive discussions with the island nation’s leadership, aiming to strengthen the special bilateral ties.
During his visit, Jaishankar highlighted India’s consistent support for Mauritius in its quest for progress and prosperity. This visit is one of Jaishankar’s first bilateral engagements since his re-appointment in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term in office.

At an event attended by Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Jaishankar expressed that India’s relationship with Mauritius has grown into a robust partnership. He mentioned that the bilateral ties between the two countries serve as a role model for India’s successful development collaborations abroad.
The event marked the inauguration of 12 High Impact Community Development Projects funded by India. In addition, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, covering areas such as education, culture, the digitization of Immigration Archives, and collaboration in space and innovation.
A significant highlight of the visit was Jaishankar and Jugnauth handing over OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards to seventh-generation Indian-origin people in Mauritius. This gesture underscores the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations.
Jaishankar’s visit underscores the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and reflects India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy,’ Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), and commitment to the Global South.

According to the Indian High Commission in Mauritius, India has close and long-standing relations with Mauritius due to historical, demographic, and cultural reasons. A key aspect of this special relationship is that nearly 70 percent of Mauritius’s population of 1.2 million are of Indian origin.
This visit by Jaishankar highlights the enduring bond between India and Mauritius and reaffirms India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in its development journey.
