Five individuals, including two women, were arrested at the Guwahati Railway Station by the Government Railway Police (GRP) for allegedly entering India illegally from Bangladesh, officials reported on Tuesday.
The GRP officials identified the five as Bangladeshi nationals. They reportedly entered India from Agartala in Tripura and were en route to Bengaluru in Karnataka in search of employment opportunities. Their journey was interrupted when security personnel intercepted them at the Guwahati Railway Station on Tuesday morning.
The police detained the group while they were on a train. The individuals were then taken to the Paltan Bazar Police Station. After registering a case against them, the police proceeded with the arrests.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sohid Sikdar (22), Md. Ismail Sardar (19), Mosamad Moina (18), Farzana (18), and Abdullah. According to the police, Sohid Sikdar hails from the Khulna district of Bangladesh, while the other four are from the Sylhet district.
During the interrogation, the suspects revealed that they each paid ₹20,000 to a gang to facilitate their illegal entry into India. The police are investigating the gang involved in this smuggling operation.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal immigration and the efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb such activities. The police are working to identify and dismantle the networks that facilitate illegal entries into the country.
