Just days after an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, an armed man wearing a ski mask was arrested near the Republican National Convention, according to reports. The man, carrying a concealed AK-47 pistol in his tactical backpack, was apprehended by United States Capitol Police in Milwaukee, where prominent Republican politicians and officials are gathered at the Fiserv Forum.
Fox News reported that officials found a full magazine of ammunition inside the man’s bag. The Milwaukee Police Department told CNN that the suspect was initially observed looking suspicious, wearing a ski mask and carrying a large tactical backpack on the street.
In a separate incident near the convention, police shot and killed a man wielding two knives. The man, identified as 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe, was armed with a knife in each hand and charged at an unarmed individual, prompting officers to open fire. Two knives were recovered from the scene.
These incidents follow the failed assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire. Trump survived with a nicked ear, but the attack resulted in a bloodied face as the bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.
Trump was formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate on Monday and selected 39-year-old Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. While Trump remains confident of a return to the White House despite legal issues and two impeachments during his first term, President Joe Biden is grappling with weak polls and concerns over his health within the Democratic Party.
