The 16-member crew of the Comoros-flagged oil tanker “Prestige Falcon” remains missing after the vessel capsized off the coast of Oman, the country’s maritime security centre reported on Tuesday. The sinking, which occurred on Monday, involved 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans.
The Omani maritime security centre shared the information via the social media platform X. According to Reuters, the vessel remains “submerged, inverted,” but there has been no confirmation regarding its stabilization or potential oil leaks.
Shipping data from LSEG revealed that the “Prestige Falcon,” a 117-meter-long oil products tanker built in 2007, was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Oman’s major industrial port of Duqm. These small tankers are typically used for short coastal voyages.
Omani authorities, in coordination with maritime authorities, launched a search-and-rescue operation at the scene, as reported by Oman’s state news agency late Monday.
The port of Duqm, situated on Oman’s southwest coast, is near the country’s major oil and gas projects, including a significant oil refinery within Duqm’s vast industrial zone—Oman’s largest economic project.
