The Assam Police on Tuesday gunned down 3 militants in a heavy exchange of fire in the Bhuban Hills of Cachar, near the Assam-Mizoram border. Three police officers were injured in the encounter.
The confrontation occurred when a team of Cachar Police, led by Superintendent of Police Nomal Mahatta, ventured into the Bhuban Hills. Earlier in the day, three members of the Hmar militant outfit had been arrested in Dhalai Ganga Nagar while traveling in an auto-rickshaw. The police seized an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, and other arms from the vehicle.
As the police team advanced, other militants hiding in the area launched an ambush, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted about an hour. In the crossfire, the three militant cadres—two from Cachar and one from Manipur—who had been taken into custody were shot dead.
Following the incident, the Cachar district has been on high alert. Security forces have intensified operations to track down and neutralize remaining militant elements in the region. Superintendent Mahatta emphasized the police’s commitment to restoring peace and stability and preventing further violence.
Residents, concerned about the escalating violence, have urged for increased security measures to ensure their safety. The Bhuban Hills, strategically important due to its proximity to the Assam-Mizoram border, remains a hotbed of militant activity, necessitating continued vigilance by law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the operation. The bodies of the militants have been sent for post-mortem, while the injured policemen are receiving treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
